Newry Railway Station in Norther Ireland was originally opened in 1855 and then reopened in 1985 after it had been closed for over four decades. Today it is a key stop on the express service which operates between Belfast Central and Dublin Connolly making it a very well used station.
In 2009 following the construction of a new motorway in the town - the Newry bypass - the railway had to be re-laid in a project which also resulted in the building of a new station with platforms either side of the tracks.
With Designplan having a proven, prior track record in delivering lighting for numerous rail infrastructure refurbishment projects throughout the UK, the company's Mission fittings were a logical choice for JCP Consulting Northern Ireland who were working as Consulting Engineers on this project for Translink - Northern Ireland's integrated train and bus public transport operator.
Because the railway station is an open, public area there was a need for high protection against weather and vandalism. These goals were achieved with installation of 136 IP65/IK 16 rated Mission fittings.
Highlighting the platform's curves was a necessity in order to guarantee the commuters' safety at all times - especially for those travelling at night.
Mission fittings feature extruded aluminium bodies and diffuser frames, with die cast end caps, all finished in chemical and abrasion resistant silver polyester powder coat. The fittings incorporate an extruded polycarbonate control lens with linear prisms, fitted into the aluminium frame. The lens is a very high efficacy, to ensure the maximum spacing between the fittings.
