The power to transform
Renewing entire stations is an incredibly costly exercise. Refurbishment is a major tool in helping improve the customer station experience. This is an area where rail lighting has the power to transform.
Since 1963 Designplan have been designing and manufacturing luminaires in the London Borough of Sutton to meet the specific needs of specialist market sectors where robust and durable lighting products are essential.
Designplan have produced a comprehensive overview of potential lighting applications for Network Rail Category B, C, D, E, F. Applications include everything from platforms, forecourts, subways through to public toilets.

The rail industry has its own unique applications and challenges and our Rail lighting brochure examines some of those applications in detail.
The lighting ideas and solutions suggested are anchored on the rail industry’s 4Cs roadmap, neatly summarised as “How can we improve our customer experience whilst increasing capacity on the network and at the same time reducing both our carbon footprint and the cost of running the railway”? Whilst lighting cannot, of course, be seen in isolation, we believe that it has a particularly significant part to play in helping the rail industry progress on the 4Cs challenge.
We have attained an enviable reputation as the supplier of choice in rail applications, having completed many successful projects for both overground and underground facilities.
Designplan Lighting have built a reputation for products engineered to stand the test of time.
Our luminaires incorporate metal bodies and specially designed diffusers which can resist up to 250 joules of force – 12.5 times more than an IK10 fitting (20 joules). High ingress protection and corrosion resistant paint are other key components of our “robust and durable” ethos.
