We have been manufacturing robust, long lasting luminaires since 1963. We strive to create action for a better environment and a brighter future.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

An energy efficient, circular product design is key, in practical terms, to ensuring we achieve our combined sustainability objectives. Our goals are to:

  • Make luminaires with 30+ year life.
  • Strive for 100% recyclability.
  • Maximise use of recycled materials in our products.
  • Reduce our supply chain’s carbon footprint.
  • Minimise our facility’s environmental impact.
  • Reduce waste.
  • Make your installed lighting more energy efficient.

Ultimately we are striving for a “cradle to cradle” approach to lighting.

92% Less Plastic Packaging Since 2017

Between 2017 and 2024, we reduced our plastic packaging usage by 92%. In the early years, this was driven by the introduction of our cardboard packaging machine, which significantly cut the need for plastic interior packaging. Our smart box design introduced crush zones, removing the need for plastic bumpers while enhancing product protection during transport.

More recently, in 2023 and 2024, we replaced plastic bubble wrap with crinkle paper as infill, further reducing plastic waste.

BS 8887 Standard

BS 8887-221:2025 is a new BSI Code of Practice for remanufacturing lighting products, part of the BS 8887 series on Design for Manufacture, Assembly, Disassembly, and End-of-Life processing (MADE). It outlines best practices for sustainable reuse, refurbishment, and upcycling of luminaires beyond initial production and installation.

The standard defines processes for remanufacturing in various settings, ensuring compliance with relevant standards through assessment, testing, and documentation. Relabelled products must display the remanufacturer’s name and confirm regulatory compliance. The remanufacturer is fully responsible for product safety, performance, and compliance, with particular caution required for emergency luminaires due to potential performance changes.

Circular Product Design

We have all moved away from the traditional “take-make-dispose” linear production cycle. To be sustainable we require products designed to emphasis resource reduction, extended use, reuse and recycling.

Science Based Targets

As part of the Fagerhult Group, we are committed to achieving net zero emissions no later than 2045, a target validated and approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Our approach encompasses near and long-term strategies designed within the framework of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG protocol), focusing on Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions reduction initiatives.
