The Impact Drop Test is a key part of how Designplan Lighting ensures the strength, safety and long‑term durability of its robust luminaires. This test is used to define and validate the IK rating of a product in accordance with BS EN 62262, and in many cases, Designplan pushes testing well beyond the standard to simulate the demanding conditions faced in real‑world environments.
During the procedure, a 10 kg hammer is fixed to a controlled drop bar positioned directly above the luminaire. The product is then struck on its most vulnerable surface three times at the same impact point. This method provides a clear and repeatable way to evaluate how well a luminaire can withstand mechanical shock or deliberate impact, making it particularly relevant for sectors where resilience is essential. Different heights are used to generate a specific level of energy, measured in Joules. Our specially designed drop test rig tests our luminaires from IK11 (50 joules) up to IK20 (250 joules). The fitting is hit on its most vulnerable surface 3 times at the same point. The luminaire is examined after each impact to ensure that there is no damage. Compliance is met if there is no access to live parts after the 3rd impact.
The drop test plays an important role in product development within the Designplan Laboratory, where luminaires are assessed from concept through to completion as part of an ongoing programme of improvement. This rigorous testing not only verifies compliance but also supports Designplan’s commitment to creating lighting suitable for challenging environments such as transport, custodial, secure healthcare and other high‑demand public spaces.
By replicating real‑world abuse and mechanical stress, Designplan ensures its lighting solutions provide long‑term reliability and reduced maintenance, offering reassurance to specifiers, facility managers and end users alike. The drop test is therefore an essential measure of strength, forming part of the wider testing regime that underpins the company’s reputation for robust, durable, long‑life luminaires.
