The IK rating is an international standard that indicates how resistant a product is to impact. The standard BS EN 62262 relates to IK ratings, to identify the degree of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment against external mechanical impacts.

Strength as Standard

Our experience has taught us that the IK11 rating is inadequate against the sort of vandalism our products face on a regular basis. By testing to the BS EN60068-2-75 standard using a drop hammer we have extrapolated the data from 50 joules (IK11) all the way up to 250 joules of energy (IK20). In 2021, IK 11 representing the impact energy value of 50 joules was added.

IK rating

Test BS EN 60068-2-75

Weight Height Test Type  Impact Energy Class
1,75 kg 300mm Pendulum or drop 5 Joules IK 08
5 kg 200 mm Pendulum or drop 10 Joules IK 09
5 kg 400 mm Pendulum or drop 20 Joules IK 10
10 kg 500 mm Pendulum or drop 50 Joules IK 11

Please note that BS EN 62262 does not allocate codes above IK11. The following codes are extrapolated and assigned IK references by Designplan Lighting.

Weight Height Test Type Impact Energy Class
10 kg 625 mm Drop 62.5 Joules IK 12
10 kg 750 mm Drop 75 Joules IK 13
10 kg 1000 mm Drop 100 Joules IK 14
10 kg 1250 mm Drop 125 Joules IK 15
10 kg 1500 mm Drop 150 Joules IK 16
10 kg 1750 mm Drop 175 Joules IK 17
10 kg 2000 mm Drop 200 Joules IK 18
10 kg 2250 mm Drop 225 Joules IK 19
10 kg 2500 mm Drop 250 Joules IK 20
