  • Designplan were appointed to provide lighting to the refurbishment of Britain’s first purpose built cycling tunnel which was first opened in 1951.

The Grade II-listed structure runs under the River Tyne between Haydon and Jarrow. Our Mission luminaire was chosen due to its robust construction, excellent lighting uniformity, low energy use and easy maintenance

The project team specified our Mission luminaires for installation throughout the site. These units deliver bright illumination across the long, iconic tiled tunnel. Our Mission was selected for its exceptional durability and impressive lighting uniformity. These robust fittings can easily withstand the damp conditions often found in subterranean settings. The new system provides consistent light levels, which effectively removes dark patches and boosts user confidence.

This upgrade significantly reduces energy usage compared to the original fluorescent system. Our LED technology also lowers maintenance costs for the local authority. The lighting integrates perfectly with the tunnel’s historic features and Victorian-era charm. This project showcases our ability to deliver technical excellence in challenging public spaces. We continue to support sustainable active travel through innovative British manufacturing. Designplan remains a leader in providing secure, long-lasting lighting for the UK’s vital transport infrastructure.
