Limited outdoor time makes natural light indoors crucial for supporting health and visual stimulation. Modern education blocks, particularly in newly built custodial facilities, are designed to be bright, incorporating natural light alongside advanced lighting controls.

Good quality lighting enhances performance, concentration, and well-being, which are crucial for learning in any educational setting. This is especially important in environments focused on prisoner rehabilitation.

LED lighting is ideal for educational environments as it eliminates the risk of distracting bad-lighting factors such as poor illumination, glare, flicker and colour imbalance. LED lights do not flicker or buzz when close to the end of their perational life, and they remain brighter for longer.

Robust luminaires are required in applications such as libraries and class rooms to provide a safe yet noninstitutional feel.

Daylight sensors should be incorporated to control the level of artificial light. These light fittings will remain unlit when natural light levels are adequate, also helping reduce energy and running costs.

Section 19 of the Estates Directorate technical standard STD/E/SPEC/018 sets out a range of standards custodial luminaires must comply with. Prison education blocks are flexible spaces so we recommend 500 lux at desk height as recommended by CIBSE LG5 and BS EN12464-1:2011. Vertical illuminance should also be considered.
