History

Our history dates back to 1963 with an idea for a great product. An extra strong light fitting engineered to withstand the most severe weather conditions.

Made in Britain

We’ve been making robust luminaires in the UK, the London Borough of Sutton to be exact, since 1963.

A history of innovation

Here are a few key dates from our history.

1963FORMATION
We have an idea for a great product, a linear vandal and weather resistant light fitting. Designplan and the Sparta luminaire are born.
1974QUALITY MANAGEMENT
We become one of the first UK lighting companies to obtain BSI accreditation for our equipment and testing arrangements.
1983EXPANSION
We move to a new factory in Sutton and expand into new market sectors following the launch of our Quadrant luminaire.
1988CERTIFICATION
We receive MoJ approval for Monitor II, which is rolled out extensively in prison cells throughout the late 1980’s and early 1990’s.
2009INNOVATION
We launch our first LED luminaire and develop retrofit gear trays for our installed fluorescent lighting.
2011COLLABORATION
We join the Fagerhult Group, allowing us to operate independently with the support of a large multinational.
2014MANUFACTURING EXCELLENCE
We design and move to a state of the art BREEAM ’Excellent’ manufacturing facility, increasing capacity and future proofing our capability.
2018MARKET LEADER
We launch a vandal resistant luminaire that can resist an impact of 250 joules of energy. Cementing our market leading reputation.

Market leader

Our timeline demonstrates that we have raised the bar in design and innovation for vandal resistant lighting. We are pioneers in the manufacture of energy efficient LED luminaires for challenging environments. This includes trainsport, custodial, community and secure health applications.

We operate in a high quality, BREEAM ’Excellent’ manufacturing facility with a low carbon footprint. This is achieved by a highly efficient building fabric, state of the art building services and on-site renewable energy generation. We’re continually applying the latest manufacturing techniques and product materials to set the industry standard in robust, weather and vandal resistant lighting.
