Designplan’s history began in 1963 with the vision of creating an exceptionally robust and durable luminaire capable of withstanding the most challenging environments. Since then, we have been illuminating demanding environments.
We have established ourselves in particular with anti-vandalism lights and lights for projects with high security requirements, such as custodial, secure heath or community and public sector. Over time, our team has repeatedly set standards in the design and construction of particularly robust, weatherproof and vandalism-resistant lights through the consistent use of the latest technologies and materials.
History Timeline
| 1963 | FORMATION We have an idea for a great product, a linear vandal and weather resistant light fitting. Designplan and the Sparta luminaire are born. |
| 1974 | QUALITY MANAGEMENT We become one of the first UK lighting companies to obtain BSI accreditation for our equipment and testing arrangements. |
| 1983 | EXPANSION We move to a new factory in Sutton and expand into new market sectors following the launch of our Quadrant luminaire. |
| 1988 | CERTIFICATION We receive MoJ approval for Monitor II, which is rolled out extensively in prison cells throughout the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. |
| 2009 | INNOVATION We launch our first LED luminaire and develop retrofit gear trays for our installed fluorescent lighting. |
| 2011 | COLLABORATION We join the Fagerhult Group, allowing us to operate independently with the support of a large multinational. |
| 2014 | MANUFACTURING EXCELLENCE We design and move to a state of the art BREEAM ’Excellent’ manufacturing facility, increasing capacity and future proofing our capability. |
| 2018 | MARKET LEADER We launch a vandal resistant luminaire that can resist an impact of 250 joules of energy. Cementing our market leading reputation. |
| 2023 | 60 YEARS YOUNG! The idea we had back in 1963, for a vandal and weather resistant light fitting, has helped us create a reputation for illuminating challenging environments. |

This is achieved by a highly efficient building fabric, state of the art building services and on-site renewable energy generation.
