Emergency Lighting

  • Aston Group are the framework contractor responsible for maintaining and upgrading the lighting systems in the London Borough of Waltham Forest’s residential blocks. The council were finding that ongoing repairs were costing on average £300,000 annually. The installed fluorescent technology had become outdated, and with the phasing out of compact fluorescent lighting, replacements were becoming challenging.

The London Borough of Waltham Forest, like many others, are committed to a Climate Energy Policy, requiring energy savings and a reduced carbon footprint. However, ensuring the tenants received best value for money was also a high priority.

To address these challenges, Aston Group proposed a proactive solution. By introducing new LED lighting and intelligent lighting controls across council properties, estimated energy saving calculations predicted that this investment could yield returns in three to five years.

    The Challenges:

    • Robust Replacement Lighting: Finding durable and long lasting replacement lighting was crucial.
    • Manufacturer Guarantee: Securing a manufacturer offering a five-year guarantee on the fittings, including emergency lighting batteries, to minimise repair or replacement costs.
    • Compliance with Lighting Level Requirements: Ensuring the correct setup to meet lighting level requirements.
    • Recycling Process: Implementing a recycling process for old light fittings to minimise waste.
    • Resident Accommodation: Fitting lighting to residents’ needs while properties remained occupied.
    • A flexible lighting controls solution to adapt to any changing needs.

    The Solution

Aston Group adopted a phased approach, starting with a trial on two sites and expanding to cover 370 properties. Longer-life LEDs with significant energy savings and a 50,000 hour lifetime were chosen. We offered a five year warranty on fittings, including lithium back-up batteries. Microwave sensors with a dimming function were integrated for enhanced energy efficiency, alongside remote controls for easy on site commissioning.

Designplan worked with Aston’s Group installation team to ensure site deliveries were managed on time to minimise any impact or disruption for residents.

This programme of works has delivered a futureproof solution across Waltham Forest Council’s properties, aligns with environmental goals, and reduces energy costs, all while considering residents’ needs.
