For general subways and pedestrian underpasses, BS 5489‑1:2020 specifies higher daytime lighting levels,
typically up to around 350 lux, with lighting controls used to reduce maintained illuminance to approximately 150 lux during night‑time conditions. These recommended levels take account of the different visual requirements during the day and at night, whilst providing the levels of light needed to promote both safety and a strong sense of security.
When planning subway and underpass lighting schemes, vertical illuminance must also be considered to ensure good facial recognition, helping people to feel safer and improving the effectiveness of CCTV recordings. Consistent, even lighting can also help reduce shadows and glare, which further supports visibility and wayfinding.
Lighting vertically onto surrounding surfaces can also help transform enclosed areas, making them feel brighter, more open and welcoming.
