General

What makes Designplan Lighting solutions different?

Designplan lighting solutions are built for tough environments. We focus on safety, durability, and long-term performance. Every product is robust, reliable, low maintenance, and designed around real-world applications.

Where are your products manufactured?

All Designplan lighting products are manufactured at our UK facility in Sutton, Surrey. This gives us full control over quality, consistency, and compliance with UK and international standards.

Do you offer CPD or technical training?

Yes. We provide Continuing Professional Development (CPD) seminars and technical training sessions tailored to architects, engineers, and specifiers. These sessions cover lighting for secure and complex environments. To arrange a face to face or virtual session, please contact cpd@designplan.co.uk or visit www.designplan.co.uk/about-us/cpd-seminars/ to find out all the CPD topics available.

How do I obtain an estimate for your luminaires?

Please contact sales@designplan.co.uk with project details, and our customer services team will get back to you.

Sustainability and Compliance

How do your lighting solutions support sustainability?

Our lighting solutions are designed for durability, energy efficiency, and minimal environmental impact. Made with recyclable materials and smart controls, our luminaires can reduce energy use by up to 90%. Manufactured in a BREEAM Excellent rated factory, we divert over 99% of our waste from landfill and as part of the Fagerhult Group, we are committed to achieving net zero by 2045.

Do your luminaires use recycled content?

Where possible, we utilise recycled content material in our luminaires. An example of this is the average content of our aluminium sheet, extrusion and die-cast is 54% recycled aluminium. As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, we are constantly reviewing and finding ways to maximise the recycled content of all of our products.

Are your luminaires energy efficient?

Yes. Our luminaires use high-performance LEDs and are designed to optimise light output while reducing energy consumption. Many can be paired with controls for further energy savings.

How do you reduce plastic in packaging and production?

We have eliminated most single-use plastics in our packaging and significantly reduced plastic components in our products. Our sustainability programme continues to focus on reducing environmental impact in every area of our business.

Technical and Product Performance

What is IK and IP rating in lighting?

IK rating measures a luminaire’s resistance to mechanical impact, while IP rating defines protection against dust and moisture. Designplan products are designed in accordance with BS EN 62262 and BS EN 60529. Our products are ideal for vandal-resistant and exterior applications.

Do your luminaires support smart lighting controls?

Yes. We offer a range of lighting control solutions, both wired and wireless for all your lighting and emergency lighting requirements.

Can your products be customised?

We offer a range of custom options including size, colour temperature, optics, and accessories to suit specific project needs. Speak to our technical team to explore bespoke solutions. Please contact technical-sales@designplan.co.uk for further details.

Do you provide datasheets and LDT Files for your products?

All datasheets and LDT Files are available on every product page under the downloads section.

Installation & Maintenance

Are your products easy to maintain?

Yes. Our luminaires are designed for quick and easy maintenance. Utilising demountable gear trays containing all of the electrical components ensures simple and effective maintenance with minimal downtime or disruption to business.

What support do you offer after installation?

Designplan never turns its back on our products. Our team of customer support and technical engineers are available for any after sales enquiry. Please contact sales@designplan.co.uk for any support.

How can I order replacement parts or diffusers?

You can contact our customer services team directly to request replacement parts. We aim to supply spares quickly and ensure compatibility across our product ranges. Please contact sales@designplan.co.uk.

Do you provide installation instructions for your products?

For any installation instructions, please contact technical-sales@designplan.co.uk.

30 Year Design Life

What does “30 year design life” mean?

Our luminaires are engineered to remain in the field and fit for purpose for at least 30 years. This means that, when installed and maintained correctly, the product structure will not fail, even in the most demanding environments.

How is the 30 year design life tested or verified?

We apply rigorous testing to all products, including impact resistance, corrosion protection and electrical safety. Our in-house lab is designed to ensure all of our products are fit for purpose and aligned with UK and EU standards. Many products also undergo third-party verification where required.

Does a 30 year design life mean a 30 year warranty?

Not quite. Our products are built to last 30 years, but our standard warranty is separate and typically reflects the expected lifespan of electronic components like LEDs and drivers. Structural integrity, however, is designed to endure for three decades or more. All our LED and lithium battery products come with a 5 year warranty as standard.

What is the recommended maintenance cycle on a product that lasts for 30 years?

We recommend periodic inspections, cleaning of diffusers, and replacement of electrical components when needed, which we make easy via simple demountable gear tray design.

Ligature Resistance and Secure Environments

What is ligature resistant lighting?

Ligature resistant lighting (formerly known as anti-ligature lighting) is designed to reduce the risk of self-harm or suicide by eliminating points where a ligature could be attached. Our fittings are tested to minimise these risks in mental health, custodial, and other secure settings.

Where should ligature resistant lighting be used?

Ligature resistant lighting (formerly known as anti-ligature lighting) should be used in high-risk environments such as psychiatric wards, secure residential units, police custody suites and prisons, anywhere users’ safety and staff security is a critical concern.

How do your fittings reduce the risk of self-harm?

Our fittings feature smooth profiles, concealed fixings, and impact-resistant materials to minimise tampering and remove ligature points. Designs are validated through sector-specific and calibrated testing.

Are your products tested for use in secure environments?

Yes. We test for impact resistance (IK ratings), ingress protection (IP ratings), and anti-ligature performance. Many products are approved and specifically designed to meet the stringent requirements of secure environments set by our customers.
