Waiting rooms in transportation hubs should feature inviting lighting to enhance feelings of safety and security. Bright interiors, with light-colored surfaces and increased vertical illuminance, are preferred, along with some light directed onto the ceiling.

Lighting should be sufficient to allow reading of printed matter, whether seated or standing. Warm or intermediate colour temperatures will help promote a welcoming feel.

Care should be taken to avoid obscuring any electronic information displays that may be present either by obstruction or having a luminaire positioned too close to the display.

Technical Support

The general recommendation in EN 12464-1:2014 is for 200 lux to provide a light, welcoming feel for use at all times of the day and night. Linear fittings have better light spread at higher angles so they are preferred for this application as they minimise wall scalloping – providing more even vertical illuminance.
