The Dust Chamber Test (IP5X / IP6X) is carried out to identify the level of protection the luminaire provides against the ingress of fine dust particles.

The luminaire is switched on outside the dust chamber and left for 30 mins to bring it up to its normal operating temperature.
After 30 minutes the luminaire is placed inside the chamber, with minimum disturbance. The dust test starts with the luminaire switched on. After 1 minute the luminaire switches off automatically. The duration of the test is 3 hours. Once the test has finished a minimum of 30 minutes is allowed for the powder to settle.
The luminaire is taken out of the chamber and the dust carefully cleaned off. The luminaire is then opened and inspected to check for dust inside. The IP rating is applied as follows: – IP5X – no harmful dust – IP6X – no dust.
Immediately following the water and dust tests, the luminaire shall withstand the electric strength test specified in Section 10 of BS EN 60598-1.
Product testing is vital to ensure our luminaires remain up to our standard. To find out on other ways in which we test our luminaires, in our lab click below:
